Referral Program Terms
Effective May 2, 2026 · Last updated July 14, 2026 · legal@keepingup.com
1. Program Overview
This referral program is operated by Keeping Up Inc, a Delaware corporation ("Keeping Up"). Keeping Up's referral program allows current users ("Referrers") to invite others to join Keeping Up. Both the Referrer and the new user ("Referred User") may receive rewards as described below, subject to these terms.
2. Rewards
Referred User Reward
New users who sign up through a valid referral link receive 30 days of Keeping Up Pro free. The value of those 30 days depends on which annual rate would otherwise apply: approximately $4.03 at the Founding Member Tier 1 rate ($49/yr, limited to the first 100 Founding Members), approximately $5.67 at the Founding Member Tier 2 rate ($69/yr, slots 101–500), or approximately $8.14 at the standard annual rate of $99/yr. The reward is applied when the Referred User completes onboarding, which includes connecting at least one bank account via Plaid.
Late-attribution window. If a referral link is followed and attribution arrives after onboarding is already complete, the 30-day Pro bonus is applied only if the Referred User's Keeping Up account is less than 24 hours old at the time attribution is recorded. This window exists to distinguish genuine signup-phase attribution (a user tapping a friend's link during or shortly after account creation) from post-hoc claims made days or weeks after organic signup. Attributions arriving after the 24-hour window are still recorded for the Referrer's tier-qualification count (subject to §3 and §9), but do not trigger the Referred User 30-day bonus.
Referrer Reward
Referrers earn free Pro access through a tiered reward system based on the number of qualified referrals. A referral becomes qualified once the Referred User either (a) has maintained a completed account for at least 14 days since onboarding and recorded at least 3 bank transactions within a 30-day period, or (b) starts a paid Pro subscription. The activity requirements in (a) protect the program from automated or abusive signups, while (b) recognizes that a paying subscriber is a genuine referral regardless of tenure. The Referred User still receives their 30-day Pro bonus immediately on onboarding — only the Referrer's tier reward waits for qualification. Rewards are cumulative (not additive) — reaching a higher tier replaces the previous tier's reward total:
- 1 successful referral: 1 month of Pro free
- 3 successful referrals: 3 months of Pro free
- 5 successful referrals: 6 months of Pro free
- 10 successful referrals: 12 months of Pro free (maximum)
Referrer rewards are available only to Referrers with an active paid subscription (Founding Member Path B at $49/yr or $69/yr depending on tier, Pro Individual, or Pro Household). Users currently on a Founding Member Path A free trial do not earn Referrer rewards until their card is charged and the subscription becomes paid. When a Path A trial converts to paid, any referrer rewards earned during the trial period are automatically applied to the account at that time.
Rewards are applied to the Referrer's account upon reaching each tier threshold, do not carry cash value, and are subject to the expiration rules in §6.
Free months extend Pro access; they do not reduce, defer, or replace any scheduled subscription payment. For Referrers on an active paid subscription, earned months are banked and applied automatically as additional Pro access beginning when the paid subscription ends. For Referrers without a paid subscription, earned months extend the current free-access period directly.
3. Eligibility
- Referrers must have an active Keeping Up account in good standing.
- Self-referrals are not permitted (you may not use your own referral link). This is enforced at the database layer.
- Referral links may not be posted on coupon sites, deal forums, or any platform that implies a discount without disclosing the referral relationship.
- Each email address may only be referred once across all Keeping Up accounts it has ever been associated with. For Gmail addresses (and Gmail-hosted accounts on any domain Google operates, including
@googlemail.com), we treat plus-tag suffixes and dots as cosmetic:alex@gmail.com,a.lex@gmail.com, andalex+promo@gmail.comall resolve to the same underlying mailbox and are treated as one eligible referral. This prevents the well-documented Gmail plus-tag exploit while leaving every other email provider's rules unchanged. - Keeping Up employees and contractors are not eligible for referral rewards.
4. Reward Delivery
Rewards are applied automatically to your account. If you do not have an active paid subscription, free Pro days unlock Pro access for the granted duration starting immediately (subject to §6 expiration). If you have an active paid subscription, free Pro days are banked against your account and applied when your paid subscription period ends — see §6 and §11 for details. You will not be charged during free Pro periods earned as a non-paid user; if you later start a paid subscription, any remaining free days are banked against your account per §6.
Referrer rewards are recorded in an internal grants ledger (audit trail) and are subject to the guardrails described in §9.
5. Tax Considerations
Referral rewards have monetary value and may constitute taxable income under US tax law. You are solely responsible for any taxes owed on referral rewards you receive. Keeping Up does not provide tax advice. If the aggregate value of rewards you receive exceeds IRS reporting thresholds in a calendar year, we may issue a 1099 or other required tax documentation. Consult a tax advisor with questions.
6. No Cash Value & Expiration
Referral rewards (free Pro time) have no cash value, are non-transferable, and cannot be exchanged for cash, credit, or other consideration. Rewards expire if your account is closed or terminated.
If you do not have an active paid subscription, referral rewards expire 90 days after your most recent successful referral. Each new successful referral extends the expiration window by another 90 days, allowing active Referrers to accumulate rewards without losing them. We will send a reminder email approximately 15 days before expiration.
If you have an active paid subscription (Founding Member Path B, Pro Individual, or Pro Household), earned Pro days are banked against your account rather than being added to your current billing period. Your paid subscription continues to renew at its regular cadence; the banked days are applied at the end of your subscription, extending your Pro access one final time before it fully ends. See §11 for platform-specific details and a worked example. Banked days do not expire independently while your subscription remains active.
Expired rewards cannot be recovered, but new referrals will earn new rewards under the then-current tier structure.
7. FTC Disclosure
When sharing your referral link publicly (social media, blogs, etc.), you must clearly disclose that you may receive a benefit if someone signs up through your link. Example disclosure: "I may earn free Pro access if you sign up using my link." Failure to disclose may violate FTC guidelines on endorsements and material connections.
8. Program Changes and Termination
We reserve the right to modify, pause, or terminate the referral program at any time, with or without notice. Rewards already credited to an account (applied either as free Pro days or banked days under §6) are honored on their original terms and are not affected by future changes to the tier structure.
Uncredited but earned rewards — for example, tier rewards that a non-paid Referrer has qualified for but which have not yet been applied because the Referrer has not yet started a paid subscription (per §2) — are governed by the tier structure in effect at the time the reward is applied, not the time it was earned. If the tier ladder changes between qualification and application, the new structure applies. We will give at least 30 days' notice of any tier-structure change by email to registered users.
9. Fraud Prevention & Guardrails
We may disqualify referrals and revoke rewards if we suspect fraud, manipulation, fake accounts, stacked referrals, plus-addressed or disposable email abuse, or violation of these terms. Decisions regarding disqualification are at our sole discretion.
Reversed qualifying payments. If a Referred User's qualifying payment is refunded or charged back within 60 days of the referral qualifying, the associated Referrer reward may be revoked and any banked days for it reversed. After that period, a qualified referral's reward is final and is unaffected by a later refund or by a lapse of the Referred User's own subscription. A Referred User who refunds their own subscription forfeits their remaining Pro access, including any referral bonus.
To manage program cost, Keeping Up may pause new referrer-tier grants when monthly free-month issuance exceeds a capped budget. In such cases, grants will resume the following month and no earned tier is lost.
Per-Referrer burst limits. To protect the program from abuse, the 30-day Pro bonus granted to new Referred Users is subject to per-Referrer rate limits: a soft cap of 5 grants per 24-hour window and 20 grants per 30-day rolling window. When these limits are reached, new invitees are still attributed for tier-qualification purposes (so your tier count is never understated), and their 30-day Pro bonus is deferred — it will be applied automatically when your rolling window clears, typically within a day or two. You will not lose the bonus unless the invitee's account is inactive for more than 60 days after attribution.
10. Household Plans
Referrer rewards apply to the Referrer's individual account, not to the household subscription as a whole. If a household owner has earned referrer rewards and later disbands the household, the earned Pro days remain on their account.
11. Platform Differences (iOS vs Web)
Referral rewards are administered centrally by Keeping Up regardless of how you purchased your subscription. Subscriptions are processed by Stripe, whether you subscribe on the web or through in-app checkout on iOS. For paid subscribers, earned Pro days are banked against your account (as described in §6) rather than added to your current billing period, and are applied at the end of your subscription when it terminates.
Cancellation and refund requests are handled through Keeping Up (Settings → Plan & Billing); referral rewards are not refundable. Referred users on the web also see subscription options on the /welcome step, including the Founding Member rate-lock option (locked for as long as you remain continuously subscribed) — $49/yr for the first 100 Founding Members, $69/yr for slots 101–500, subject to slot availability — alongside the standard $99/yr 30-day-trial and skip-for-now options.
When a subscription ends — whether by cancellation or expiration — any banked referral Pro days are applied to the terminal period, extending your subscription access one final time before it fully ends. For example, if you cancel with 30 days of banked referral rewards, your Pro access continues for 30 days past the end of your paid period.
